How Do Gutter Guards Work to Protect Your Gutters?

Gutters can become ineffective if they are blocked with leaves and debris. Blocked gutters can cause a myriad of problems for your building. Gutter guards are designed to work all day, every day, all Four Seasons of the year. Gutter guards stop leaves blocking your gutters and prevent birds or vermin accessing your roof space and allow you to harvest the best quality water for your water tanks. The most effective gutter guards are mesh screens that cover over the top of your gutters externally. These mesh screens attach securely from the roof to the outer lip of the gutter. This design allows for water to travel from the roof into the gutter system and freely to the downpipes.

How Effective are Gutter Guards?

Externally fitted gutter guards are the preferred choice for long term, effective gutter protection. Tapex mesh used by LeafScreen is proven effective in NZ since 2001, it is UV stabilised, food grade and comes with comprehensive warranties. Installing gutter mesh with LeafScreen gives you peace of mind that you’re investing in a great product that will get the job done.

How are Gutter Guards Installed Over a Gutter?

External gutter guards attach to the roof, they follow the pitch of the roof down and over the gutter pan to attach to the outer edge of the gutter. Installation techniques can vary from company to company and can vary for different types of roofs.

At LeafScreen, as members of the New Zealand Roofing association since 2002 our installation techniques are proven, and all materials are certified for use on roofs.

For metal or iron roof varieties such as Corrugated, Five Rib or Deck roof profiles the mesh is generally attached using saddles that sit on the corrugations of the roof and are held in place with metal trims on the outer edge of the gutter.

For tile roofs, such as metal tile, concrete tile and shingle roofs, the mesh covers the gutters, runs up over the first tile and is tucked under the second tile to hold in place.

Other roof types such as Brownbuilt, Butynol, Italian or Spanish tile, may require the mesh to be attached with a five-degree trim or sealants.

LeafScreen have 12 colours of mesh available to match your roof colour and match the colour of your gutters with 90-degree metal trims. With copper gutters we use copper trims. The professional team at LeafScreen are trained to assess the requirements of your roof and install the mesh to best protect your gutters and roof space.

How do gutter guards work?

Once in place, the rainwater that runs off your roof tracks along the mesh and through the holes to allow the water access to your clean and clear gutters. Without any large leaf debris blocking the gutters the water flows freely to the downpipes and will often flush any small particles of dust or bird seed that can fit through these holes along on its way. The secure nature of this installation prevents birds and vermin from finding an entry point to your roof space through the gutters. With gutter protection in place you also ensure the best quality water from your roof is collected in water tanks.
